So you’re thinking about starting up a home gym. Out of all the multitudes of equipment at a commercial gym, what would a personal home gym need? Every home gym is going to be a little bit different, as people have different tastes and preferences. We’ve collated the facts and come up with 6 essentials that every home gym should have.
1. Motivating workout playlist
An upbeat playlist can both energise you and lift your spirits. Motivating workout music has also been proven to increase the intensity at which you exercise. While the music at the gym is okay, we all have our own preferred music to fuel the workout. A great way to ensure you have your music on the go is to invest in a workout armband that will hold your mp3 player or phone as you exercise.
2. Weight sets
People often shy away from lifting weights and instead opt for cardio exercise. The key to a balanced workout is to employ both. Lifting weights is how you build strength, and strength is what helps us in everyday activities such as lifting, bending down, balancing and endurance of both the body and the mind. As well as this, strength training not only builds muscle but can prevent disease, improve mood and help you lose weight. So if you’re going to have a gym in your home, ensure you purchase weight sets to maximize your workout.
3. Nutritional snacks
Your body won’t have the energy it needs to expend if you don’t fuel it with nutritional food. Keep nutritional food in your home, including gym snacks such as plenty of fluids, muesli bars and fruit. Working out is a two fold experience – there’s what you do in the gym and what you do in the kitchen. Without the right fuel, your body won’t be able to perform. Ensure you give yourself the best opportunity in the gym by eating well.
4. Workout essentials
Other workout essentials you’ll want to have around include a sweat towel, sweat bands, hair ties/bobby pins, hand sanitiser, disinfectant spray, paper towels, water, lifting gloves, and anything else you may need to make you feel comfortable. Feel free to include anything you want around you that will make your workout experience more enjoyable. After all, it is your home gym!
5. Good earphones
Good music can’t be heard without the right earphones! There are a wide range of ergonomic earphones available on the market today that are shaped to your ear. This means that they won’t fall out during a workout, and also ensures that you get the best listening quality possible. If earphones bother you, perhaps consider a suitable speaker setup to get your blood pumping.
6. Proper workout gear
You will need proper workout gear in your home gym for both comfort and safety reasons. Always wear enclosed, supportive shoes when working out to protect your body. As well as this, wear tight, suitable clothing so you don’t catch on gym equipment. Good socks and, if you need it, a supportive sports bra, will also go a long way to ensuring you have the most comfortable workout possible. If you have any injuries make sure you have the appropriate strapping tape or bandages in hand as well.
