When unexplainable tragedies are carried out by individuals with troubled lives, the national discussion turns to mental health statistics. Approximately one-third of U.S. adults report issues that would be considered diagnosable mental health problems each year. Approximately one-fourth of American adults deal with moderate or severe mental health issues. Adults aren’t the only people challenged. In fact, mental health challenges are not limited by income or by age.
While there are many detailed statistics about the types of disorders faced by people, one of the most serious is that more than 90 percent of suicides can be attributed to mental health issues. There has been a 400 percent increase in the use of antidepressants from 1988 to 2008. Especially affected, women are considered to be 2.5 times more likely to take an antidepressant than men. As much as 23 percent of the population of women in their 40s and 50s take antidepressants. Meanwhile, approximately 20 percent of children are said to face mental health disorders.
