Holly Holm produced one of MMA’s biggest upsets when she delivered a second-round head-kick to former undefeated champion Ronda Rousey Saturday night in Melbourne. Holm followed with a couple more strikes on the ground as referee swooped in to stop the fight before Rousey could take any more damage. The knockout ended 28-year-old Rousey’s 12-fight unbeaten run and handed 34-year-old Holm the bantamweight title.
UFC 193’s Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm had a very quiet build. That was, until the contentious weigh-in scuffle. If you thought that was just for show, though, the fight proved you mistaken.
Rousey wore her anger on her sleeve, refusing to touch Holm’s glove in the center of the cage. When the bell sounded, Rousey charged forward, and Holm did precisely what we at FightState said she should; stay on her bicycle and box Rousey up. Rousey, for the most part, seemed undeterred, wading forward and throwing heavy leather.
That emotional approach ended up being her undoing.
Rousey pushed and pushed in the first round, but Holm boxed her up. Rousey was repeatedly tagged in the first round, and when she came out in the second, she showed no difference in her approach. Holm ended up perfectly slipping a punch and tagged Rousey with a left hand. That punch wobbled Rousey in a big way but before everyone had the chance to process it, a brutal headkick immediately followed it up.
That headkick floored Rousey on the spot. Her legs buckled and she crumbled to the mat.
Shock. Awe. Jaws smacking to the ground. Surprise! So much surprise!
The official result would be Holly Holm by TKO at 0:59 of Round 2. Shocking result. Look forward to the immediate rematch at UFC 200!
