Isaiah Bird: No Excuses

Meet Isaiah, a seven year old little boy who has never known what it was like to own a pair of legs. But even despite his young age, he’s got an incredibly great outlook on life. He understands the hand that life dealt him may not but fair, and replies with “No Excuses.” He may not look it, but Isaiah is a bit of a wrestling star; going against the odds and winning out against kids you would assume have the advantage, and so do they. But this little boy with an incredible drive pushes on, beating

Isaiah comes from a home of abuse and strife; both of his parents holding charges against the other. His life was off to a terribly rocky start, in and out of shelters while his father was in and out of prison. It wasn’t until 2012 that Isaiah’s school principal introduced the two. Upon seeing what was going on, Rodriguez offered to allow Isaiah to stay with him and his family. He promised the boy’s mom her son would have clothes, food, shelter. She would never have to worry about where her little boy was going to stay.

The two truly share a deep bond, doing everything together any normal father and son would do. Rodriguez wakes him up for school, makes sure he gets dressed and ready, teeth are brushed and then it’s off to school; for them both. To help Isaiah get around a bit better Rodriguez actually carries him on his back, everywhere they go that isn’t in a car. Rodriguez even attends his second grade classes with him at Toledo Elementary.

The highlight of their days will always be wresting practice however; Isaiah being on the youth team founded by Rodriguez – The Gladiators. After the fun is over and everyone is washed up, it’s time for bed, anywhere from 9:45-10:00 p.m.

Even though these are kids, there’s no malice or contempt on the team. Isaiah and the other boys build off each other, learning from the moves and switches each member can make and using it in competitions. There are no special treatments either; Isaiah is expected to perform just like every other member of the team, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

This boy may be half the size of others, but his dreams and ambitions are larger than life. That is why little Isaiah is an inspiration for us all, reminding us that no matter what walk of life we may come from, there are no excuses. Through hard work, dedication – and maybe a little help here and there, you can accomplish anything.
