Ways In Which Stress Causes Problems in Weight Loss

Stress can negatively affect your weight loss activities.


In this era of technological advancements, the life of the individuals has become easier. However, the advancements have given birth to competition, and with competition on individual levels, the one major problem that every person in the world faces is of Stress.

Stress is one of the major problems of humankind at this point of time. For other physical problems like low growth ratio in women the solutions are present in the form of testosterone replacement therapy for woman. However, stress is purely cognitive. Besides the psychological problems caused by stress, it also affects the physique, most importantly the weight loss efforts. The lines below explain how stress is caused and its effects on weight loss.


Cortisol is the substance released by the adrenal cortex when the body feels a stressor or any situation in which the body is under stress. Several researches have proven that, cortisol serves as a hindarance in fat loss. Therefore, all the problems caused by stress in weight loss are due to the production of cortisol.

Stress and Weight Loss:

The main purpose of Cortisol is to provide energy to the body. However, due to constant stress its production increases as a result it causes problems in weight loss regime. Cortisol causes problems in weight loss in three different ways.

1. Less Responsive Cells:

Cortisol makes the body cells less responsive to the signals produced by body. When body cells get non-responsive to inslulin and Leptin it is when the loss of weight stops.

Insulin- When the body produces sufficient amount of insulin, but due to the less responsiveness of cells, the body cannot response to the signal of production of insulin. As a result of which body keeps on storing fats as a backup to compensate with apparent non-production of insulin. Thus problems in weight loss occur.

Leptin- It is a hormone, the production of which when high in the body, the brain responds to it and as a result of which the a person feels full thus no over-eating. However, when the brain cells become non-responsive a person feels hungry and tends to eat more, thus, a big problem in weight loss.

2. Increased Inflammation:

The human body is composed of different types of fats. Among them Visceral fat is the one that surrounds body organs and most prominently seen on the belly of a person. Cortisol increases the inflammation through the body, as a result of which the fat loss ceases.

The presence of visceral fat causes inflammation in the body, and its inflammatory effects are increased if cortisol is produced in greater amount due to stress. Therefore, Cortisol and Visceral fat both result in increasing the inflammation of the body, as a result of which the weight loss program becomes ineffective.

3. Deregulation of Hunger Hormones:

The third way stress affects the weight loss program is when Cortisol deregulates the hunger hormones. Primarily, there are two hormones that regulate the hunger pattern of a person, namely Leptin, and Ghrelin.

Leptin- As mentioned before Leptin serves as an appetite controller. With its level going down in body, a person feels hungrier, thus weight gain.

Ghrelin- As important is Sermorelin ghrp pertaining to the growth of a person; similarly Ghrelin is important to the control of hunger of a person. This hormone is released when a person is hungry; however, its production increases substantially when a person is under stress.

Both, the decrease in the production of Leptin and the increase in production of Ghrelin due to Cortisol results in a person gaining weight instead of losing it.

Bottom Line:

In short, stress greatly devastates the weight loss efforts of a person. More importantly, besides just hindering in the weight loss, it also makes a person gain weight. Therefore, if you are on a weight loss program, try to avoid stress as much as possible.
