What is 1MR Vortex?
BPI Sports describe 1MR vortex as “our strongest, most powerful training powder, designed to push you through your toughest workouts. It’s created for anyone looking for more energy, morte intensity and more power from start to finish.”
A fairly generic product description there. The only way we can determine whether 1MR Vortex delivers on any of these factors is by taking a closer look at the ingredients included and their dosages. But before that, we absolutely must address the giant elephant in the room…
Was 1MR pre-workout once banned?
In a word YES! Back in 2011 BPI sports were hit with a class action lawsuit in the state of California over accusations that their products contained a dangerous amphetamine like drug known as DMAA (Dimethylamylamine).
This chemical, originally used as a nasal decongestant has made its way into a number of pre-workout supplements over the years as a result of its stimulant properties. There are a number of potentially harmful side effects to its use, however, including rapid heart rate and increased blood pressure and it can even cause strokes.
Whilst BPI products no longer contain DMAA, it’s previous inclusion within their range, including 1MR is a worrying sign. Any manufacturer willing to risk the health of their potential customers at the expense of making money should be treated with a hefty dose of caution in our eyes!
Ingredients in BPI sports 1MR Vortex pre-workout
Before we take a closer look at the ingredients included in this 1MR Vortex review, it would be prudent of us to address the single most important factor when it comes to the Supplement Facts label. Does this product contain any proprietary blends?
For those unsure exactly what a proprietary blend is, listen up! It is essentially a mixture, or ‘blend’ of ingredients in which each component ingredient is listed but not its weight. Only the weight of the entire blend is acknowledged.
This means, you, the consumer, has no way of knowing exactly how much of each key ingredient you are taking on board in one serving of the product. You could be consuming an optimal dose, but equally you could not, there is no way of knowing, unless you have a laboratory in your living room.
Despite what supplement manufacturers might try and tell you, there is only one reason why they make use of proprietary blends, and that is to hide underdosed ingredients from potential buyers. And this is why, they should be avoided like the plague!
Guess what, 1MR vortex is made up of a single proprietary blend of six ingredients. That means you have no idea how much of each of those ingredients you’re getting per serving. NOT a good start to our BPI Sports pre-workout review!
Without accurate dosing information for each active ingredient, it makes it very difficult for us to assess their efficacy, but here goes anyway!
Glycerol is thought to boost both aerobic and anaerobic performance but there is very little if any scientific research to support its benefits for exercise. In fact, its main effective use appears to be as a laxative.
Consequently, whatever the dose of this ingredient, it seems largely irrelevant. We prefer to deal with ingredients with a proven track record in helping to boost your workout performance, and glycerol simply doesn’t deliver on this aspect.
With a long history as a herbal analgesic, Indigofera Pulchra is believed to have antiinflammatory properties. This seems to be the principal reason for it’s inclusion in this BPI product and may help to improve recovery time from particularly intense training.
But with next to no scientific research into its effects on exercise performance, it’s yet another active ingredient that our 1MR Vortex pre-workout review has absolutely no interest in!
Finally an ingredient with some tangible benefits for exercise performance. Effective at boosting energy and reducing your perception of fatigue as well as enhancing your bodies ability to burn fat as a fuel, caffeine has become commonplace in most pre-workout supplements!
It can be taken safely at doses as high as 400 mg per serving. This kind of quantity can have some unwanted side effects, however, particularly for those new to pre-workout supplements or with low tolerance to caffeine. As a result, our preferred dose is around the 250 mg mark.
It’s impossible for us to tell what kind of dose is included in this product as a result of its inclusion in a proprietary blend. Having said that, the weight of the total blend is 1705 mg, which means there is plenty of room for a solid dose of caffeine per serving.
This ingredient is presumably included for its potential digestive benefits which can often be helpful in products containing high levels of stimulants which can upset the gastrointestinal tract.
Once again, however, there is limited scientific research in support of its benefits for exercise performance.
This natural herb is thought to inhibit something called the GABA receptor in your brain. This helps to stimulate your central nervous system and in turn increase energy levels.
Its efficacy for exercise performance is unknown, let alone what kind of dose is required to produce the purported effects.
There is normally a risk of mild side effects when consuming a pre-workout supplement, mainly due to the inclusion of high doses of stimulant ingredients such as caffeine.
However, without knowing exactly how much of any of the active ingredients are included, there is no way of knowing the potential side effects of this BPI Sports product. Add to that, the distinct lack of scientific research on all of the ingredients included, with the exception of caffeine, and it makes this even harder.
High doses of caffeine, however, are likely to cause side effects including anxiety, diarrhea, vomiting and the jitters. Your guess is as good as ours as to whether 1MR’s dose of caffeine is high enough to be of concern though!
Pros and cons
At $19.99 on Amazon, 1MR Vortex pre-workout comes in at a very reasonable $0.40 per serving, which makes it one of the cheapest pre-workout products we’ve ever reviewed!
There are 4 typically whacky flavours to choose from in: blue raz, fruit punch, snow cone and sour watermelon. This is nowhere near as many options as a number of pre-workout products available and could lead to fussy customers struggling to find a flavour which suits their tastes!
There’s only one word to summarise our 1MR Vortex pre-workout review and that’s… DISAPPOINTING!
It starts with the ultimate pre-workout no no in using a proprietary blend and never really looks back! It is impossible to trust a product which is not willing to tell you how much of the ingredients they have selected are included in one serving. As a customer, you should never be put in a position where you don’t know exactly what you are putting into your body.
Add to that the fact that 5 out of the 6 ingredients included in this proprietary blend have zero compelling evidence to suggest they are of any benefit to exercise performance whatsoever and things go from bad to worse for this BPI Sports pre-workout.
The only saving grace is the fact that it’s cheap and in all likelihood contains a meaningful dose of caffeine, but that really is it! As a result, you’d be much better off purchasing a pure caffeine supplement.
It would be a fraction of the cost per serving, you’d know exactly how much of it you were taking and you would also be able to rest easy in the knowledge you weren’t consuming any potentially harmful ingredients, which in all honesty the manufacturer of this product doesn’t know an awful lot about.
Our conclusion…? Look elsewhere for your pre-workout needs!
How much caffeine is in a 1MR vortex?
Good question. The products use of a proprietary blend makes it impossible to tell with any degree of certainty. Based on the total weight of the blend, however, it does seem likely that it includes a worthwhile dose!
