Ingredients in ION Performix pre-workout
The ingredients in ION Performix pre-workout form a single proprietary blend weighing just 3714 mg and containing as many as 8 separate components. The only ingredient which has its precise quantity disclosed is caffeine.
The use of a proprietary blend, is, in our opinion, the ultimate sin of any nutritional supplement manufacturer. It means it is impossible for you to determine how much of each ingredient you are consuming per serving, which is far from ideal when each of those ingredients is only effective when dosed optimally.
Despite what brands might try to tell you about why they use proprietary blends (normally to hide patented formulas from competitors) there is actually only one reason why they do! And that is because they are trying to hide underdosed ingredients from YOU, the consumer!

A widely researched supplement ingredient, when dosed correctly, beta alanine helps to increase your muscle stores of something called carnosine, which in turn increases your lactic acid buffering capacity. Given that lactic acid build up is one of the primary causes of muscular fatigue, anything which can help alleviate against its effects is going to be pretty helpful to your exercise performance, particular anaerobic activity lasting between 1 and 4 minutes.
Unfortunately, given that the optimal dosage of beta alanine is 4-6g per day for a period of at least 2 weeks, and the total weight of the proprietary blend in Performix ION Multiphase pre-workout is just 3714 mg in the whole dosage including all ingredients, it is impossible for there to be an optimum dose.
Citrulline is, without doubt, one of the hottest nutritional supplements on the market when it comes to exercise performance. By increasing your blood levels of an amino acid called arginine, supplementation with citrulline helps you to increase nitric oxide production. Nitric oxide causes vasodilation, improving circulation and allowing more blood to flow to working muscles during exercise.
As with beta alanine, however, there is no way the proprietary blend within this Performix pre-workout can contain the 6-8g optimum dose of citrulline malate.
Creatine is the most widely researched and clinically effective nutritional supplement currently available. Dosed correctly it can help users to increase strength as well as lean muscle mass. Most of these scientific studies have focused on the monohydrate form of creatine which has been proven to be effective for exercise performance at a daily dose of 5g for a period of a number of weeks.
Whilst there is significantly less research into the efficacy of the hydrochloride form of creatine, it is generally agreed that it can be dosed at much lower levels than creatine monohydrate and still be effective.
There are studies which suggest 1.2g per day is enough to experience the ergogenic benefits of creatine hydrochloride. Thus, whilst it is mathematically possible for the 3714 mg blend in ION pre-workout to contain an optimal dose, it still seems unlikely given the number of other ingredients included and the fact that creatine is only the 4th most prevalent ingredient in the mix.
Caffeine (175 mg)
Caffeine is the only ingredient included in this pre-workout product which is outside the major proprietary blend, and as a result the serving size is disclosed. Caffeine is definitely the most commonly used stimulant ingredient in pre-workout supplements and for good reason. 100 mg is enough to produce the energy boosting and fat burning benefits whilst most studies suggest that it’s safe for consumption at levels up to 400 mg per day.
That means the 175 mg in this Performix ION Multiphase pre-workout will definitely be of benefit, but it is a little short of our preferred 250 mg serving.
Betaine and Tyrosine
We’ve grouped these two ingredients together because there is limited scientific research to support their efficacy for exercise performance.
Betaine is purported to help users increase strength and lean muscle mass and tyrosine has supposed benefits for cognitive performance and energy levels due to its close relationship with hormones such as adrenaline.
There have, however, been nowhere near enough studies into either to determine an optimal dosage, and given we have no idea how much of either are actually in this product, there is little point in discussing their inclusion any further!
So is Performix pre-workout any good or just hype?
I think it’s fairly safe to say that this performix product is hype and only hype. It is impossible for any of the ingredients to be dosed effectively as the total blend amounts to less than a lot of the optimal servings of individual ingredients included.
Pre-workout products containing proprietary blends should be avoided at all costs, especially ones containing as many as 8 ingredients with a total weight of just shy of 4g.
Yes it contains a useful serving of caffeine, but it certainly isn’t optimum. Plus who buys a pre-workout just for the caffeine content!
Are there any side effects in ION Multiphase pre-workout?
Without knowing precise quantities of individual ingredients it is a little tricky for us to advise as to whether there may be some side effects associated with taking this Performix pre-workout.
Of the ingredients included, there are probably two which have the potential to cause minor side effects. Significant doses of caffeine can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, the jitters and even anxiety. In all honesty, however, the 175 mg serving in this product is pretty moderate and is unlikely to cause too many problems.
Beta alanine tends to cause a tingling sensation on the surface of the skin which normally subsides after about 20 minutes. The good news is this symptom is completely harmless and is actually a sign you are taking a meaningful dose of beta alanine and not something else entirely useless. As far as Performix goes, there is unlikely to be a high enough dose to cause this side effect anyway!

There aren’t an awful lot of positives to this Performix pre-workout review in all honesty. The use of a single proprietary blend containing as many as 8 ingredients and weighing under 4g makes it pretty much impossible for this product to be of any benefit to your exercise performance.
Add to that the limited choice of flavors, fairly mediocre (if effective) dose of caffeine and the 88 cents per serving price tag, whilst generally reasonable, actually looks a little expensive. There are undoubtedly some extremely effective ingredients in this product, including citrulline malate, beta alanine and creatine, but none of them can possibly be dosed at levels high enough to be of any major benefit.
As a result, if you are serious about taking your training to the next level, and want to know exactly what you’re putting in your body and how much, then this Performix ION Multiphase pre-workout isn’t for you. You can undoubtedly get more for your money elsewhere. Spend a little more per serving and you’re looking at a whole new level of product. Our final verdict, you deserve better from your nutritional supplements, and there are far superior options out there, you just need to find them!
