If you’re starting to take your weight management goals more seriously, then chances are you’ve heard of fat burner supplements, and most likely done a little bit of online research about them. You ask yourself, are they really worth the money, do they actually do anything to help me lose weight and burn fat?
And what are you met with? Most likely, sales pitch after sales pitch and manufacturer after manufacturer telling you that their fat burner supplement is the best on the market but without actually offering any proper explanation as to why!
Well, that doesn’t have to be the way. Our completely independent review is based solely on the latest scientific research and contextualized against a significant bank of other fat burner product reviews. This way, we simply give you the information you need to make up your own mind. Simple!
What is BSN Clean?
The company:
“Bio-Engineered Supplements and Nutrition, was founded in 2001 and since then has become a global leader in the sports nutrition marketplace through relentless dedication to creating dynamic, cutting-edge, and result-producing products. BSN products and the brand itself have won more than 35 sports nutrition awards over the course of the last six years, more than any other company in the industry.”
According to BSN, their Clean fat burner provides concentrated fat burning support, with a 3 pronged approach taking care of: energy, weight management, and fat burning, they seem to think this product has all bases covered.
One major positive to note at this stage is the fact that BSN Clean is banned substance tested and trusted by Sport certified, so at least you know you’re covered if you’re an elite athlete!
As far as the effectiveness of the product is concerned, the best way for us to assess its merits is by taking a closer look at the specific ingredients which feature and how they are dosed. Before we do, let’s just consider how BSN suggests you take this product for optimum effect.
When should I take BSN Clean fat burner?
According to the manufacturer, you should take 1 capsule of BSN Clean 3 times per day for optimum effect.
BSN Clean ingredients
Before we consider individual ingredients in more detail there is one piece of information that can be found with the briefest of glances at the Supplement Facts Label, which should give you a pretty good idea as to whether the product in question can be trusted.
Does the product contain any proprietary blends…? For the uninitiated among you, a proprietary blend is a mix of ingredients where the total weight of the blend is disclosed but not the weight of each component part of that blend. That means you have no way of being certain as to how much of any ingredient you are actually consuming per serving! Not particularly helpful when all of these ingredients have optimum dosages that are important to adhere to!
Despite what supplement manufacturers might try to tell you about why they use proprietary blends, there is actually only one reason. To hide underdosed key ingredients from YOU, the consumer.
As a result, whenever you see a product, which includes any number of proprietary blends then the alarm bells should start sounding in your head!
The good news for this BSN Clean fat burner review is that there isn’t a single proprietary blend in sight!
FYI the dosages disclosed below are based on a three capsule daily serving of this product.
Green coffee extract- 600 mg
Green coffee extract comes from coffee beans that haven’t been roasted. Coffee beans, in this state, contain a compound called chlorogenic acid which has been purported to have antioxidant effects, helping to lower blood pressure and boost weight loss.[1]
There is, however, very limited scientific research to support any theories about green coffee extract and weight loss and more needs to be conducted before we can be sure that it is both safe for human consumption in the long term and effective at boosting weight loss. As a result, our BSN Clean fat burner review considers the 600 mg dose in this product largely irrelevant!
Caffeine anhydrous- 345 mg
One of the most widely used supplement ingredients on the market, appearing in energy drinks, pre-workouts and of course fat burners, caffeine is, arguably the most common stimulant ingredient in use today, and for good reason.
By stimulating the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) caffeine increases levels of adrenaline. This helps to free fatty acids from fat stores around the body for use as fuel during exercise and day-to-day life.[2]
Scientific research has demonstrated that even a low dose (100mg) has the potential to produce a thermogenic effect, boosting the resting metabolic rate by 3-4% over a two and half hour period.[3]
The 345 mg dose in every 3 capsules daily serving of BSN Clean is easily enough to generate the thermogenic response we’re after for fat loss. It is also a pretty potent serving and therefore may cause some negative side effects. More on that a little later!
Cissus quadrangularis- 300 mg
Cissus quadrangularis is a traditional medicine for joint and bone health (as well as various feminine disorders and menopause), and shows promise in promoting bone growth. As a result, it is popular as a joint aid for athletes, with preliminary evidence supporting these benefits.
As far as weight loss and fat burning are concerned, studies have shown that a 300 mg daily serving has the potential to significantly reduce body weight, whilst promoting increases in lean muscle mass and suppression of appetite.[4] This all sounds like a pretty good combination of factors for weight loss, and what’s more, the 300 mg dose per 3 capsules serving of BSN Clean matches the quantity used in the above study perfectly.
Grapefruit bioflavonoids- 300 mg
Research continues to reveal that consuming grapefruit may have benefits for weight loss. The key may be an enzyme called AMP-activated protein kinase, which appears to get activated by an organic compound in grapefruit called nootkatone. When AMPK is activated, it encourages the body’s energy-producing processes, like glucose uptake, for example, which helps boost metabolism. That, in turn, can encourage weight loss.
Whilst most studies corroborating these theories have been conducted on animals, there have also been human studies involving the benefits of grapefruit when it comes to weight loss. A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food looked at the impact of grapefruit and grapefruit products on body weight and metabolic syndrome in 91 obese patients where grapefruit capsules and grapefruit juice resulted in more weight loss than placebo groups.[5]
As far as specific quantities of flavonoids are concerned, unfortunately, your guess is as good as ours.
Yerba mate extract- 300 mg
Yerba mate is a herbal tea made from the leaves and twigs of the Ilex paraguariensis plant. The leaves are typically dried over a fire, then steeped in hot water to make the tea.
Animal studies show that yerba mate may reduce appetite and boost metabolism, which can help with weight loss.[6]
Human research suggests that it can also increase the amount of stored fat that’s burned for energy.[7] In a 12-week study in overweight people, those given 3 grams of yerba mate powder per day lost an average of 1.5 pounds (0.7 kg). They also reduced their waist-to-hip ratio by 2%, which indicates lost belly fat.[8]
300 mg of yerba mate extract per day, may, therefore, not be sufficient to bring about these changes. More human studies would be needed at varying dosages to confirm its potential for fat burn and weight loss.
Cayenne extract- 90 mg
The key ingredient within cayenne pepper extract as far as fat burning is concerned is capsaicin.
Capsaicin has been shown to increase thermogenesis by enhancing catecholamine (i.e. adrenaline) secretion and is also capable of suppressing appetite.[9]
Scientific research has demonstrated that capsaicin supplements can boost metabolism by up to 50 kcals a day which could lead to significant weight loss over time.[10] In some cases, taking 2.5 mg with each meal resulted in 10% more fat being burned in the subsequent 24 hours than a control group.[11]
The 90 mg of cayenne pepper per 3 capsules serving of this BSN Clean product should, therefore, definitely have the desired effect on your fat-burning potential!
BSN Clean benefits
This product undoubtedly contains ingredients which should be of benefit to your fat burning goals, and at the right kind of dosages too. Caffeine, cayenne extract, and Cissus quadrangularis may all contribute to increased thermogenesis and the suppression of appetite which are only going to help in your battle against the belly!
BSN Clean side effects
The only ingredient you need to be worried about as far as side effects are concerned is caffeine. 345 mg per day is a significant serving, which has the potential to cause symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, jitters, and even anxiety.
The good news is, this daily serving is consumed across three smaller 115 mg doses so the chances of these side effects are reduced somewhat. However, if you are unsure of your tolerance to caffeine or are aware that you have a low tolerance level, it might be worth sticking to a one or two capsule daily serving of this product, at least to start with!
Is it a scam?
No, it certainly doesn’t seem to be. BSN Clean contains too many well-researched and proven ingredients to be considered a scam. That doesn’t, however, mean they get all aspects of this product right. There are still one or two ingredients included with sketchy scientific evidence to corroborate their purported effect, or which are effective but simply underdosed (yerba mate).
Where to buy BSN Clean fat burner and price?
We can’t actually find BSN Clean for sale anywhere. It is listed on the global online retail website Amazon as “currently unavailable. We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.” Other trusted third-party supplement sites such as luckyvitamin.com also no longer seem to carry this item. Perhaps it’s been discontinued as it doesn’t even feature as a listed product on the official BSN website.
We did find one listing for BSN Clean on eBay, but with no detailed information about the product, and no photo of the Supplement Facts Label, we’d consider it a risky purchase, so we’re not even going to discuss how much it was selling for.
Summary
I think it would be fair to say that our BSN Clean review has mixed conclusions about this product.
On the one hand, it contains a few well-researched and proven ingredients like caffeine, cayenne pepper, and cissus quadrangularis in the kind of quantities required to actually have an effect on some of the parameters which influence weight loss.
But, on the other hand, it also contains other ingredients, which may be effective, but don’t appear at the correct dosage (yerba mate), or which simply have no credible scientific research to corroborate their effect (green coffee extract).
Add to this uncertainty, the fact that we only seem to be able to find it for sale on a dodgy-looking eBay listing, with neither Amazon, the official BSN website, nor trusted third party supplement sites stocking the product, and things go south pretty quickly.
As a result, our final verdict would be… if you can find a trusted retailer of this product and it doesn’t cost you a small fortune, then it may be worth giving a go as it has the potential to help you shed those excess pounds. If you want a little more from your product than ifs and buts, however, and you’d rather purchase something that is easily accessible, then BSN Clean probably isn’t for you!
