What is Thermopure?
MyProtein is one of the most successful and popular nutritional supplement brands on the market, with offerings in recovery, pre-workout, and fat burner products, among many others.
They describe Thermopure as follows:
“Our formula of essential vitamins and popular ingredients including green tea and black pepper extracts — that’ll boost your everyday wellbeing, with caffeine increasing endurance performance, and cayenne pepper supporting your weight-loss goals.”
Before we take a closer look at some of the ingredients mentioned above and assess their dosages against the latest scientific research, let’s consider how MyProtein suggests you use Thermopure for optimum effect.
How to use it?
To reap the maximum benefits of Thermopure, we recommend taking 1 serving (3 capsules) 45-60 minutes before your morning workout with a glass of water.

There is one question above any other that needs to be answered regarding the ingredients in any nutritional supplement, and that’s whether the product contains any proprietary blends…?!
For those who are scratching their heads wondering what on earth a proprietary blend is, read the next bit carefully. It is a mixture of key ingredients where the total weight is disclosed, but the precise quantities of each component are not. That means you have no idea how much of anything you are consuming, and it also makes it easy for manufacturers to hide underdosed ingredients from their consumers.
The good news for our Thermopure review is that there isn’t a single proprietary blend on show!
FYI the dosages disclosed below are based on a 3 capsule serving.
Chromium- 120 mcg
Chromium is involved in the regulation of both carbohydrate and fat metabolism. With studies showing that normal dietary intake of chromium is frequently suboptimal, supplementation may well be of benefit.
Chromium has been purported to help increase lean body mass and decrease percentage body fat, which may lead to weight loss.
The 120 mcg contained within this Thermopure fat burner is actually a little in excess of our 100 mcg recommended daily serving so this is a very good start to the ingredients section of our review.
Green tea extract- 375 mg
The high levels of catechins, particularly EGCG, within green tea extract are responsible for its potential fat-fighting benefits!
Research has demonstrated that ECGC intake can increase energy expenditure and stimulate fat oxidation, which will ultimately help you lose weight.[1]
The physiological mechanism behind this effect is thought to involve the inhibition of the enzyme responsible for degrading noradrenaline. Catechins prolong this hormones action, increasing overall energy output and fat burning!.
There is, as yet, no real agreement on an optimal dose of green tea extract for fat burning purposes but the 375 mg dose in Thermopure is a little shy of the industry standard 500 mg daily serving!
Tyrosine- 200 mg
Tyrosine is probably most commonly associated with benefits for cognitive performance and energy levels, with most research into the ingredient-focused on these areas. However, some have suggested tyrosine may also be an effective aid to weight loss.
One of the main mechanisms of substances that promote fat loss is stimulating the sympathetic and central nervous systems. This increases the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline, which are the primary mediators of lipolysis (breakdown of fat) and thermogenesis.[2]
In fact, studies have suggested that the effectiveness of several sympathomimetics (drugs that stimulate the SNS) may be limited by the amount of tyrosine substrate available for catecholamine synthesis.[3]
An optimal serving for tyrosine supplementation has not yet been established, with recommended dosage varying between 500 mg irrespective of weight to 150 mg/kg of body weight. Consequently, it’s hard for us to properly assess the 200 mg dose contained in this Thermopure fat burner, but it seems more than likely to be insignificant!
Caffeine- 150 mg
Caffeine’s fat-burning impact lies in its stimulatory properties, increasing adrenaline levels and in turn helping to liberate fatty acids for use as fuel.[4]
Studies have found that even a low dose (100mg) has the potential to induce a thermogenic effect at rest, increasing the resting metabolic rate by 3-4% over a 150 minute period.[5] This is part of why it features such regularity in multi-ingredient nutritional supplements where space is at a premium.
The 150 mg dose in every 3 capsule serving of Thermopure should therefore be enough to elicit a thermogenic response, and without some of the adverse side effects associated with really significant single doses of caffeine.
Theanine- 125 mg
Theanine consumption is actually most commonly related to a reduction in anxiety and stress and improvements in focus. However, its potential impact on weight loss and fat burning is far less understood.
Having said that, theanine passes through the blood-brain barrier and can induce a dopamine release and reduce the concentration of serotonin in the brain. Because neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin are believed to be involved in the regulation of food consumption, it is thought that theanine supplementation may help reduce food intake and therefore contribute to overall body weight management.[6]
More research needs to be conducted to determine an optimal dose, which means it is challenging for our My Protein Thermopure review to properly assess the 125 mg serving this product.
Cayenne powder- 50 mg
The capsaicin found in cayenne powder has been shown to boost thermogenesis by increasing your production of hormones like adrenaline whilst also being capable of suppressing your appetite.[7]
Scientific research has shown that capsaicin supplements can boost metabolism by up to 50 kcals a day which, over an extended period of time, has the capacity to result in significant weight loss.[8]
The 50 mg serving in Thermopure is only half of our preferred dosage of 100 mg, however, so may not actually be effective in helping you to lose weight and burn fat!
Black pepper extract- 5 mg
Black pepper extract supplies an active ingredient called piperine, known as a thermonutrient, and is therefore thought to help boost your metabolism.
Piperine is also purported to promote efficient food breakdown, including the enhancement of nutrient absorption and inhibit adipogenesis (the formation of new fat cells).
We consider a 10 mg serving per day an optimum dose which means the 5 mg dose in Thermopure is definitely shy of optimal!
Thermopure benefits
The overwhelming feeling we get when looking at the ingredients in this product is that the vast majority are underdosed. The caffeine and chromium servings should be sufficient to help induce thermogenesis and reduce body fat so from this perspective, this product is beneficial.
However, there are plenty of other ingredients included, which either don’t have the scientific research to back up the theory behind their fat-burning potential, such as theanine and tyrosine, or there is the research. Still, they don’t feature the requisite amounts to be effective, such as green tea extract, cayenne powder, and black pepper extract.
Thermopure side effects
Nothing to worry about as far as side effects are concerned. Nothing is dosed at high enough levels to cause any difficulties.
Is it a scam?
Thermopure isn’t a scam, no. On the contrary, MyProtein is a hugely successful and well-respected supplement manufacturer. That doesn’t mean they don’t get things wrong from time to time, though!

● Myprotein.com customer reviews: 4.31 out of 5 stars
- 5 stars- Used for weight loss, 01/03/18:
- “Not sure as pre-workout sup like some reviewers have mentioned as I have only taken this for weight loss. I haven’t changed my diet or done more cardio (not got the time to do even more!) so these must be the cause for the improved weight loss. I have noticed some days that I get a little heartburn and a few extra toilet breaks for a pitstop but I would say these are working a treat as I am hurtling towards my goal weight again.”
- 5 stars- Fat burners, 10/05/16:
- “Good quality fat burners, have lost around 4 stone whilst using them. Was around 23 stone in January and now at 19. Impressed and work well with a balanced diet and exercise.”
- 2 stars- Didn’t get much from it, 01/12/18:
- “I’m usually a big fan of MyProtein products by Thermopure didn’t really do it for me. I didn’t see any weight loss benefit at all, my body fat% is already pretty low but I want to cut a last couple of lbs. After a month of Thermopure coupled with regular training and a good diet I’ve seen no change on the scales at all. Perhaps, as I’ve trained for years so already have a fairly high metabolism and don’t have all that much to shift, it’s just not meant for me. It did seem to give a bit of a boost for those early morning training sessions, although no more than a cup of coffee or a caffeine tab. On the plus side, it certainly had me feeling nice and warm on those cold mornings in my training studio (shed at the bottom of my garden).”
Thermopure price and where to buy?
You can purchase Thermopure for $25.99 for 60 servings on the official MyProtein website, which works out at a very reasonable 43 cents per serving.
You can also find the product for sale at global online retail giant Amazon, so be sure to shop around for the best price!
Summary
If there were one word to summarise our MyProtein Thermopure review, it would be underdosed. The product definitely features some encouraging ingredients scientifically proven to help burn fat and lose weight, such as green tea extract, cayenne powder, and black pepper extract. But, unfortunately, none of them are dosed at high enough levels to elicit the thermogenic response they are designed to induce.
Add to that the inclusion of ingredients like tyrosine and theanine, which have very little scientific research to support any theory about their fat-burning potential, and you can see why our Thermopure review might be a little disappointed.
Even the most proven ingredient featured (caffeine) isn’t exactly dosed at high levels, with 150 mg well shy of the servings in many other fat burners we’ve reviewed. Although, at least that means you shouldn’t suffer from any of the negative symptoms associated with extremely high caffeine intake!
The 43 cents per serving price tag is definitely a positive and makes this product one of the cheapest fat burner supplements on the market.
But, if you’re looking for a supplement that is packed full of proven fat-burning ingredients dosed at effective levels, then this MyProtein Thermopure product probably isn’t for you!
